Save Berry Hill Quarry Trees, are a group of residents from the Kings Walk District Ward in Mansfield within Nottinghamshire.
We believe the works NEED to take place on the quarry face for the safety of those who live in the immediate vicinity of the affected area.

We also believe that this work can be done in a different way to the current MDC proposal.

A way in which the work undertaken & delivery of materials can all be done from the bottom of the cliff.

A way in which no access road along the top of the quarry cliff face needs to be constructed.
A way in which not all of the trees along the cliff face need to be destroyed & ruin the character of the quarry & Kings Walk area for generations to come.

Save Berry Hill Quarry Trees
Due to some rock falls from the former Berry Hill quarry face, Mansfield District Council have recently announced their intentions to mitigate risks of any further falls.
MDC intend to do some engineering work on the area of the quarry face.
To undertake these works the current MDC proposal plan is to access machines from Winsor Road, chop down all the trees behind those houses & create a permanent hard standing area there.
Then along the rear of properties on Berry Hill Road chop down all the trees along the cliff top & create a permanent roadway through which is now currently woodland.
This action would result in nearly all the trees in the woodland area (1000-2000 trees) being chopped down along the top of the cliff.
With Mansfield District Council trying to solve one problem & cutting down all the trees on the cliff top in the process they could create an even bigger problem & potentially make the cliff tops more susceptible to stormwater runoff , soil degradation (erosion and landslides) & will also change the character of our quarry area for the worse forever.
These are temporary works & we believe a better engineering solution must be available, one that doesn't involve destroying the homes of all our local wildlife & doesn't have a permanent negative environmental impact on our area.
The obvious solution is to access as close to the work as possible, from the bottom of the cliff in the quarry & for any work on the top from a temporary access somewhere along Berry Hill Lane instead of Winsor Road. Although a part road closure would be probably be required this could save hundreds of these trees & conserve many of our wildlife habitats.
